Chief Resource Development Officer


This is a Full-time position in Santa Barbara, CA posted November 29, 2021.

We are looking for a Sr.

Leader who is passionate about the Y and dedicated to securing resources that support the important work of our Y.

Job Description

Serves as a member of the President/CEO’s senior leadership team, guiding the process of resource development within the organization to ensure the Channel Islands Y is thriving and fulfilling it’s strategic plan and mission, providing leadership in resource development and support to all branches in the advancement of the YMCA’s mission.

All functions will be performed to create a highly visible and positive image of the Channel Islands YMCA, a seven-branch association extending through Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

Responsibility includes identifying potential financial resources for the development and expansion of community programs, identifying grant opportunities, and collaborating with other staff to develop fundable programs.

Assists the CEO to actively engage the volunteer board of directors, assists Branch Executive Directors with same and in positioning the YMCA as a “organization of choice” for the investment of donations within the local communities served.



A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.


Five or more years of professional experience with a background in fundraising in the YMCA or another not-for-profit preferred.


Knowledge of and successful experience with annual campaigns, endowment and capital development programs.


Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.


Excellent writing and public speaking skills.


Computer skills and technology usage.


Organization skills and attention to detail.


Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.


Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.


Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.


Foundation and government grant writing expertise.

Essential Functions


Directs, coordinates, cultivates and expands association and branch capital development, annual campaign and planned giving programs.


Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.

Serves as primary staff to assigned committees of the Board of Directors.


Performs market research to identify new opportunities and partner with Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to establish strategies for pursuing new program, business, development opportunities.


Researches and meets with potential partners to investigate new program, business, development opportunities.


Develops and ensures best practices for fund development are implemented across all branches. 


Designs, consults and implements evolving, insightful, creative and effective resource development plans, for all branches, to ensure development objectives are achieved on the branch level.


Establishes performance measures, monitors results, evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s development program.


Directs effective useof donor & prospect databases.


Develops and implements annual plan to communicate with donors, potential donors, media, businesses and community organizations.

Maintains contact in the community with business and civic leaders, interpreting the work of the Y and enlisting their interest and support.


Provides leadershipfor the Association Board Annual Current Support Campaign and the Association Office Staff Campaign.


Provides effective stewardship practices for current donors to ensure donor retention and growth.


Provides counsel on and assists with special events, sponsorship proposals and development of collateral materials for association and branches.


Develops processes and is actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects for branches and at the Association level.

Maintains database resource file on top community leaders.


Secures and manages portfolio of Major Donors.

Supports the development of a Major Gifts portfolio for the CEO.


Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.


Develops systems and manages resources needed to carry out the fundraising plans.


Establishes and monitors the financial development department budget for the YMCA.


Develops fundraising policies and procedures for the association.


Tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides monthly, quarterly and annual reports as needed.


Provides training in fund raising for staff and volunteers.

Educates, motivates and provides feedback to individuals related to best practices in the fundraising process.


Represents the association as required by the President.
