Payroll Tax Analyst


This is a Full-time position in Phoenix, AZ posted September 29, 2021.

With 64 television stations nationwide, TEGNA is the largest independent television station group of major network affiliates in the top 25 markets (NBC, CBS, ABC), reaching approximately one-third of all U.S. television households. We are looking for a detail-oriented Payroll Tax Analyst with strong analytical skills. This position will be responsible for payroll tax compliance and coordination with our HR/Payroll team to assist with general payroll tax functions.

Qualified candidates may be considered from other TEGNA station locations.


  • Review tax filings and payments made by third party provider and ensure they are timely and accurate.
  • Manage Tax Rates/Tax Code set up within third party provider software.
  • Communicate with taxing agencies to resolve tax notices and inquiries.
  • Coordination with third party provider for Wage Attachments/Tax Filing and Reporting
  • Conduct monthly, quarterly, and W-2 tax reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Maintain SUI rate updates within UltiPro payroll software.
  • Prepare registration applications for State and Local Income Tax and/or Unemployment Tax IDs.
  • Maintain and resolve Ultimate Support Cases related to all tax issues/questions.
  • Respond to employee inquiries and Internal/External Audit queries timely and professionally.
  • Maintain accurate payroll/tax records and comply with the Company’s Record Retention policy.
  • Prepare Account Reconciliations for all assigned payroll general ledger accounts (i.e. Cash accounts, Tax Liability, Benefits Liability, etc.) and resolve variances timely.
  • Participate in the testing & implementation of UltiPro software updates.
  • Prepare and maintain SOX key controls related to this area.
  • Play key role during year end processing/filing, including preparing the payroll system for the new fiscal year.
  • Prepare government required reporting not supported by a third party (i.e. Annual Census Bureau Economic Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics, etc.)
  • Aid other areas in the Payroll group during peak times or absences
  • Provide analysis and reporting support for internal/external business partners


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3-4 years payroll/Payroll tax experience
  • Experience with UltiPro payroll software preferred
  • Shared service experience preferred
  • Desire, ability, and curiosity to investigate and recommend improvements to processes, procedures.
  • Proven attention to detail, good organizational and prioritizing skills and ability to multi-task and work in a rapidly expanding and changing environment.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and proactive.
  • Collaborative approach and experience working well with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written); strong interpersonal skills​.
