Senior Payroll Manager

Position Summary

Guarantee the performance of payroll operations in assigned countries in North American Payroll while ensuring teams are complaint with employment, taxation and social security laws and other related company policies.

Responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the North American payroll operations and tax teams, occasionally validate and approve the periodic payrolls as needed, act as first level of escalation for queries not resolved within the payroll teams, liaise with local leaders and People Partners to resolve issues, and other tasks.

Tasks may include: payroll processing, project implementations, root cause analysis, error reporting, bank approvals, global standardization, employee inquiry management and issue resolution. You may also be required to work with our external payroll vendors, MMC Finance and Accounting, Treasury, Global Mobility, Stock teams, Audit and the Talent Acquisition to ensure the effective delivery and improvement of end-to-end employee payroll processing and query management. While US/CAN/Islands are the primary focus of the role, you may be asked to have oversight over other regions and/or teams as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as first point of contact for complex payroll escalations.
  • Ensure standardizations across countries and conduct periodic payroll controls to ensure all assigned payrolls are processed timely and accurately for the assigned countries.
  • Build & maintain long-term relationships with the key stakeholders including line managers, peer teams, People Partners, Senior Leaders, and others.
  • Partner with payroll vendors, MMC Finance and Accounting, Treasury, Global Mobility, Stock teams, Internal and External Audit and the Talent Acquisition, and others.
  • Ensure adherence to established processes, policies, and internal controls.
  • Work closely with the Global Payroll Leader on payroll initiative as needed or required as part of the transformation process.
  • Develop strategies, Standard Operating Procedures, and workflows for the department’s activities.
  • Fulfill periodical / ad-hoc reports for the management team and / or other internal customers based on requests.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices
  • Be a key player in the development of the Global Payroll systems.
  • Work with third-party vendors like ADP for tax and garnishment processing and approvals.
  • Review and validate payroll tax filings.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Assist with all year-end process.

People Management Responsibilities

  • Manage the process of people development and performance evaluation, providing periodic feedback, coaching and empowerment to promote professional growth.
  • Identify people development needs and ensure a plan is implemented.
  • Coordinate / prioritize people activities to facilitate objectives achievement.
  • Perform regular performance reviews and goal settings for the team.
  • Coordinate process improvement initiatives while overseeing a team dedicated to special projects.
  • Work with internal and external teams as needed.

Desired Experience and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 7 years of US and Canadian payroll operations and tax experience.
  • Solid experience in managing multi-country Payroll and Tax teams.
  • Experience with payroll in Barbados, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands preferred but not required
  • Good knowledge of various country Payroll administration processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll principles and practices.
  • Ability to manage various complex projects as needed.
  • Advanced knowledge of Workday and payroll systems like ADP GlobalView or any large payroll systems will be a plus.
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Takes ownership for the areas of responsibility and deliver at high standards.
  • Ability to assess and promptly resolve problems.
  • Can manage client expectations and can work well with a variety of personalities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in years of progressive experience.
  • Experience with year-end filings for US and Canada.
